I am often asked to help with photography with the University of Portsmouth Equestrian Society (UPEC), but this is usually for our own lessons and competitions. This year our main charity is the RDA, Riding Disabled Association. I was asked this weekend to go to a local horse show at Brantwood Stables to photograph their show and to sell the photos for £5 each with all profits going to the RDA. Myself and the President of our club Evie went on Sunday. We arrived at 9.30am, just as the heavens opened. We got some photos of the first event (see schedule at the end of this post), before running for shelter inside. Ourselves and our cameras were soaking wet and so we had a discussion about what to do. We decided that it was unlikely for people to buy the photos as neither the horses or owners were looking their best due to the weather. We braved it outside once more to have another go but after only an hour the ground was like a pond and it was raining even harder. We decided to cut our losses and say our goodbyes so that we did not waste the whole weekend. We are going to look into photographing more local shows and perhaps charging more for better photos, splitting the profits between the RDA and the UPEC. I got a few nice photos and am disappointed not to have been able to take more, however I am sure there will be more opportunities.
