Giana Terranova is a 25-year-old photographer and horse enthusiast from Southern California. She graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2016 with an Equestrian Studies Degree, working in the horse industry as a rider and groom before she took the plunge into becoming a full-time photographer. Her real passion is capturing the passion between horse and rider in every photograph, whether it be in riding shots or creative portrait session. She has been an equestrian her entire life, so photographing riders and their horses is part of what makes her job so much fun.

Terranova is a travelling equestrian photographer based out of many locations throughout the United States. She aims to represent the beauty and grace of our equine partners through portraiture, as well as capturing the bond between horse and rider. As an equestrian herself, she has always held horses in a very special part of her heart, combining her equine knowledge and the art of photography to create lasting imagery and memories. This is what I aim to capture in my work too.

Giana Terranova Photography offers several different kinds of services, with multiple packages to fit your needs. Services include horse and rider sessions are equestrian-styled photoshoots that capture the relationship between you and your equine partner, black backgrounds portraits that encompass their personality and beauty in images that last a lifetime, and private client horse show photography to memorialize your competition moments. Giana Terranova Photography also offers a range of commercial, branding, or lifestyle sessions.

Her photography style is bright and airy, with greens, whites and browns featuring most in her photos. The locations she is able to shoot at definitely help provide bright and beautiful backgrounds, with the sunshine and tropical plants in places such as Wellington Florida and Gettysburg, Philadelphia.

Even when taking show photos, she manages to capture some striking and fun angles!

Her clients must enjoy seeing what pictures she has taken, from stunning photos of the horses over jumps and around the show ring to the personal moments between happy horse and proud owner after a successful round.

Some of my favourite photographs are her zoomed-in detailed shots. Taken mid-show, these are great brand shots for tack or equestrian clothing companies. The blurred background against the super detailed fur makes for such a striking image. I would like to evolve my project and do some up-close detailed drawings inspired by compositions such as these.

Her portrait photos have such a fine art feel to them. The clean backgrounds don't detract from the overall image, the angles are natural and unique. The detail in the fur, muzzle and tack is so enticing. Most importantly the horses' eyes are always soft, warm and bright. The white backgrounds make the horses' coats look so bright and healthy.

Her black background photography looks so soft and natural. The lighting isn't obvious but the horses look real and perfectly placed. This is helped by making the background a soft black rather than a solid black. Giana has created an encompassing guide on Black Background Equine Portraits! This guide focuses on the concepts of photography in the English hunter/jumper discipline using no backdrop and only natural lighting. This sixty-page guide covers everything from settings, set up, posing, and basic editing. She use visuals to explain the pros and cons, as well as break down settings and problem-solving to reach your goals as an equine photographer. This guide is a downloadable PDF.

Her horse and rider photos create beautiful visual memories for all clients. Giana has created a guide to Horse Show Photography. This is an all-encompassing guide on Horse Show Photography! Focusing on the concepts of competition photography in the English hunter/jumper discipline, this fifty-page guide covers everything from settings and angles to capturing emotion and creativity! She uses visuals to explain the pros and cons, as well as break down settings and problem-solving to reach your goals as an official or private client photographer!

Giana Terranova is hands down my favourite photographer. She captures beautiful and personal moments between horse and rider, both posed and candid. She is also able to capture some detailed portrait photos and stunning action shots. I look up to her as a photographer and a rider.

Her logo helps to enhance her brand as well as her photographic theme. Her logo is very clever, the circle resembles a zoom ring on a camera. It includes a camera icon as well as a horse so it is very clear what her job is. It also features her initials which adds that personal touch. She has her logo printed on baseball caps, polo shirts and jumpers as well as horse equipment such as saddle pads and fly veils. I would love to have this sort of brand and opportunity one day.

Terranova's logo was designed by Kelsey Keathly, who I will write about in another post.
