I wanted to get into customising model horses. (There are more blog posts on this under the Breyer tab.) I purchased a few cheap models and primed them ready for painting. Then I had to decide what colours to paint them. I made a basic silhouette of the horse so that I could visualise my ideas. Below are the models I bought.
Here are some silhouettes and a rough colour study of my initial ideas.
I wanted to paint the cob to look like my friends horse Nelson. I took lots of reference photos when I visited them over Christmas.
I wanted to paint the thoroughbred dappled grey at first, and then I started riding a TB x called Tequila and decided to use her as a reference instead.
I couldn't decide which coat I preferred so I posted the following two on my Instagram and let people vote for which they wanted me to paint! People voted for the appaloosa coat on the right.
The below two models come together in a set, so I considered how they would be paired together. I did some research on genetics and used calculators to see which coats would be realistically possible. My favourite designs are the second row.
